Tracking Down Genes for Bipolar Affective Disorder (Manic Depression)

The Columbia Bipolar Genetic Study is studying generations of families with bipolar illness, also known as manic depression, to find the genes that cause this disorder. Finding these genes will help us to improve the diagnosis, treatment, early intervention and prevention of bipolar illness. Families with at least two living members who have had a manic episode may qualify to participate in this study, which is a collaborative effort of New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) and Columbia University. NYSPI, the oldest psychiatric research institute in the United States and a "state of the art" facility, has pioneered some of the major advances in the genetic research of mental illness. The project is part of the "Healthy People 2000" initiative sponsored by the National Institutes of Health to promote health and prevent disease.
